Galatea, published in 1585, is the first and unfinished novel by Miguel de Cervantes. It is usually classified as a pastoral novel, a genre that flourished during the Renaissance; however, and although its characters are certainly shepherds, in fact they serve the author's true purpose: to conduct a psychological study of love.
